HSC Board July 2024 Activity Sheet – Prose Section

SECTION -I: PROSE

(Reading for Comprehension, Language Study, Summary and Mind Mapping)

       After working for all these software companies for so many years, I wanted to return to my first love i.e. to read and write on various subjects concerning human life and existence. Therefore, I gave up two offers of around 3 crore rupees per annum to become a writer. This is how my second innings as a writer in Marathi began.

After this, I have written about 34 books in Marathi. Most of them have become bestsellers with tens of thousands of copies sold for each. However, it is not the sales or the money that is important to me as much as the fact that these books have brought about very good changes in the lives of thousands of readers. After reading my autobiography ‘Musafir’ and a book on Psychology ‘Manat’, hundreds have come out of depression and more than a dozen have given up thoughts of committing suicide and decided to start all afresh. There are hundreds who tell me that they understood the theory of relativity or Big Bang after reading my book on Science ‘Kimayagar’. My book ‘Boardroom’ on Management has created at least 20 successful entrepreneurs. Then there are hundreds who tell me that they now can understand Economic Times or NDTV Profit after reading my book on economics ‘Arthat’. Many have turned to Mathematics after reading my book on Mathematics ‘Ganiti’. The same is true about my books on Indian Music (Nadvedh), English Literature (Zapoorza), Painting (Canvas), Western Films (Limelight) and Western Music (Symphony) or books such as ‘Genius’ series, ‘Rakta’ or ‘Vitamins’ or ‘Anartha’. It is these reactions of thousands of readers and the feeling that I am touching the hearts of thousands, if not lakhs, of my readers that keeps me going.

Why am I telling you my story? When I look back, there are a number of lessons and values that I cherish and keep learning about even today. Some of these are: Thirst for knowledge, Curiosity, Humility, Humanity, Rationality, Equality, Teamwork, Quest for excellence, Never say die, Thinking big…

B2. Spot the error and rewrite the correct sentence:

English movies have entertained the world.

My inspiration comes from my childhood experiences and observations of nature in rural Kenya. As I was growing up, I witnessed forests being cleared and replaced by commercial plantations, which destroyed local bio-diversity and the capacity of the forests to conserve water. In 1977, when we started the Green Belt movement, I was partly responding to the needs identified by rural women, namely lack of firewood, clean drinking water, balanced diets, shelter and income. Throughout Africa, women are the primary caretakers, holding significant responsibility for tilling the land and feeding their families. As a result, they are often the first to become aware of environmental damage as resources become scarce and they are incapable of sustaining their families.

The women we worked with recounted that, unlike in the past, they were unable to meet their basic needs. This was due to the degradation of their immediate environment as well as the introduction of commercial farming, which replaced the growing of household food crops. But international trade controlled the price of the exports from these small-scale farmers, and a reasonable and just income // could not be guaranteed. I came to understand that when the environment is destroyed, plundered or mismanaged, we undermine the quality of our life and that of future generations.

Tree planting became a natural choice to address some of the initial basic needs identified by women. Also, tree planting is simple, attainable and guarantees quick, successful results within a reasonable amount of time. This sustains interest and commitment. Together, we have planted over 30 million trees that provide fuel, food, shelter, and income to support our children’s education and household needs. The activity also creates employment and improves soil and watersheds.

Initially, the work was difficult because they were unaware that a degraded environment leads to a scramble for scarce resources and may culminate in poverty and even conflict. They were also unaware of the injustices of international economic arrangements. Later, they became aware of the widespread destruction of the ecosystems, especially through deforestation, climatic instability and contamination of the soil and waters all contributed to excruciating poverty and subsequent riots.

A1. Complete the web diagram on ‘the impacts of environmental degradation’:

  ————–   ————–
   Impacts of Environmental degradation
  ————–   ————–
  Loss of local bio-diversity     Damages the quality of life
   Impacts of Environmental degradation
  Scarcity of resources     Increase in poverty and conflict / dispute

A2. Provide the supporting details from the extract that highlight the positive effects of tree plantation:(2)

Positive effects of tree plantation1) ———————————-
2) ———————————-
3) ———————————-
4) ———————————-
Positive effects of tree plantation1) Provides fuel, food and shelter.
2) Gets income.
3) Creates employment and improves soil and watersheds.
4) Helps to stop widespread destruction of the ecosystems.

A3. Environmental degradation and mismanagement affect the life in rural Kenya. Explain. (2)

It’s true that environmental degradation and mismanagement affect the life in rural Kenya. Due to environmental degradation and mismanagement women from Kenya were unable to meet their basic needs. Controlled international trade has bad effect on small-scale farmers. As a result, reasonable and just income could not be guaranteed. It increased excruciating poverty and subsequent riots. It also undermines the quality of their life as well as the life of future generation.

A4. Suggest some ways to protect your local environment. (2)

Protecting the local environment involves taking actions that minimize negative impacts and promote sustainability. Here are some ways to protect the local environment:

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Encourage recycling programs and reduce waste generation. Reuse items whenever possible to minimize the use of new resources.
  2. Conserve Water: Install water-saving devices, fix leaks promptly, and practice water-efficient habits like shorter showers and using a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways.
  3. Use Energy Wisely: Opt for energy-efficient appliances, turn off lights and electronics when not in use, and consider renewable energy sources like solar or wind where feasible.
  4. Support Local Agriculture: Buy locally produced food to reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Choose organic and sustainable products to support eco-friendly farming practices.
  5. Protect Water Quality: Prevent pollutants from entering water sources by disposing of chemicals properly, avoiding the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, and maintaining septic systems.
  6. Plant Native Species: Use native plants in landscaping as they require less water and maintenance, provide habitat for local wildlife, and preserve the natural ecosystem.
  7. Reduce Car Use: Carpool, use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  8. Educate and Advocate: Raise awareness in community about environmental issues and encourage others to adopt sustainable practices. Advocate for policies that protect the environment.
  9. Volunteer for Cleanups: Participate in local clean-up events to remove litter and debris from parks, rivers, and beaches. Properly dispose of collected waste.
  10. Support Conservation Efforts: Join or donate to organizations that work to protect local habitats, wildlife, and natural resources.

Write a ‘summary’ of the above extract by using the following points.

Impact of commercial farming role of the women of Africa – environmental disruption and mismanagement and its effects on life – benefits of plantation.

The commercial farming created bad effects on the life of farmers. To help these farmers, the Green Belt movement initiated in Kenya in 1977 by an individual inspired by childhood experiences and observations of rural life. Witnessing the environmental degradation caused by deforestation and commercial plantations, particularly their effects on biodiversity and water conservation, sparked a response. Recognizing the important role of rural women, who face challenges such as lack of resources and food insecurity, the movement focused on empowering them through tree planting. This initiative aimed not only to meet immediate needs like firewood and clean water but also to provide sustainable solutions that improve livelihoods and environmental resilience. Over time, the movement planted over 30 million trees, fostering economic opportunities, enhancing soil quality, and mitigating environmental degradation, thereby improving quality of life for current and future generations in Africa.

(Poetry and Appreciation)

When I had money, money,
O! I knew no joy till I went poor;
For many a false man as a friend
Came knocking all day at my door.

Then felt I like a child that holds
A trumpet that he must not blow
Because a man is dead;
I dared Not speak to let this false world know.

Much have I thought of life, and seen
How poor men’s hearts are ever light;
And how their wives do hum like bees
About their work from morn till night.

Much have I thought of life, and seen
How poor men’s hearts are ever light;
And how their wives do hum like bees
About their work from morn till night.

Read the extract and write the appreciation of the poem given below:

My father travels on the late evening train
Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light
Suburbs slide past his unseeing eyes
His shirt and pants are soggy and his black raincoat
Stained with mud and his bag stuffed with books
Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age
Fade homeward through the humid monsoon night.
Now I can see him getting off the train
Like a word dropped from a long sentence.
He hurries across the length of the grey platform,
Crosses the railway line, enters the lane,
His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward.
