(Poetry and Appreciation)
Q.3.(A)Read the extract and complete the activities given below:(10)
Afoot and light hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good fortune, I myself am good-fortune, Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing, Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms, Strong and content I travel the open road. The earth, that is sufficient, I do not want the constellations any nearer. |
A1. Identify the lines from the extract that indicate the speaker’s ‘independence’ and ‘self-reliance’. (2)

A2. The narrator doesn’t want ‘constellations’ near to him. Give reasons.

The narrator doesn’t want constellations near to him because he doesn’t belong to them and doesn’t need them. He is self-reliant and satisfied. If he needs anything, he will take it from Nature. The earth is sufficient to fulfill his needs.
A3. ‘A man without liberty is a body without a soul,’ Explain your views in about 50 words.
Answer-
A man without liberty is like a body without a soul. This is true. Just as a soul gives life to a body, freedom gives purpose and meaning to human existence. Without liberty, a person cannot express their true self, pursue their dreams, or reach their full potential. Essentially, liberty is a powerful force to create a meaningful human life.

‘Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing.’
Answer–
Repetition
Explanation: The word ‘no more’ is repeated to put emphasis.
Alliteration
The sound of letter ‘n’ is repeated.
A5. Compose four poetic lines of your own on ‘freedom.’
Answer-
With wings movement, we take to flight,
Embracing freedom, pure and bright,

Appreciation:
Q.3 (B) Read the extract and write the appreciation of the poem given below:(4)
Is anybody happier because you passed his way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along? Or a churlish sort of “Howdy” and then vanish in the throng? Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way, Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today? Can you say tonight, in parting with the days that’s slipping fast, That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said; Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead? |
