SECTION – II: POETRY

(Poetry and Appreciation)

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

(a) The poet is blunt and direct in his expression of love.

(b) Internal beauty is as important as the external beauty.

(c) The poet is in love with lady’s outward beauty.

(d) Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder.

(b) Internal beauty is as important as the external beauty.

(d) Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder.

her hair———- her eyes———-
 Lady’s beauty – a cloudless starry night
Her mind———- her smile———-
her hair- raven, wavy, black, long hair her eyes- a perfect blend of light and darkness, (bright and dark)
 Lady’s beauty – a cloudless starry night
her mind- at peace with all below a heart her smile- winning, soft, calm and eloquent

According to me, a beautiful person is one whose mind and heart are soft and kind. The person who spreads love and compassion to all has the real beauty. The outer beauty is enhanced by the sensitive and sweet nature of such person.

I see beauty in musicians’ hands.
They are making songs for many bands.
I consider their toil as beauty of nature.
As they are building their family’s future.

As beauty kills duty
Real beauty lies in mind
For it, be sweet and kind.

It hasn’t place in memory
Be gentle and always good

Beauty is in being kind,
It lies in our own mind.

Poetic creation on ‘Beauty’
Life is a challenge
Hurdles are plenty
Facing with courage
Is a real beauty.

Rosy lips, black black hair
Smiling face, calm and fair
Full of love, eyes are pretty
You are my goddess of beauty.

I lived alone in the selfish world
Hurting always and full of cruelty
You met me and sang like a bird
Then I learnt the meaning of beauty.

Composed by – Prof. D. J. Futane
Beauty
Beauty is very simple,
It’s a smile with a dimple.
Beauty is a grace,
Just keep a smiley face.

(B) Appreciation:(4)

Read the extract and write the appreciation of the poem.(4)

They hear no sound, the swell is strong,
Though the wind hath fallen they drift along;
Till the vessel strikes with a shivering shock,
“Oh Christ! It is the Inchcape Rock!”

Sir Ralph the Rover tore his hair,
He curst himself in his despair;
The waves rush in on every side,
The ship is sinking beneath the tide.

But even is his dying fear,
One dreadful sound could the Rover hear;
A sound as if with the Inchcape Bell,
The Devil below was ringing his knell.

About Poem and poet: The poem ‘The Inchcape Rock’ is written by the Poet Laureate of England Robert Southey. Some of his short poems are  very popular with  the school children. The poem describes jealousy and its harsh impact.

Title of the poem: The poem ‘The Inchcape Rock’ has taken as its title the name of the legendary rock which is the centre of all the events.

Theme: If you do bad things to people, bad things will happen to you

Poetic Device: The Inchcape Rock is written in the form of a ballad. Figures of speech like alliteration, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia and repetition are used here. As the poem was written in 18th century, it is rich with symbol, imagery and archaism. The rhyme scheme used in the poem is ‘a a b b’.

Message of the poem: The poem gives us a message that those who do wrong things will meet with due punishment.

My opinion about the poem: I like the poem very much as it contains a good moral story.
