How to teach a poem in the classroom
Key points of all the Poems-
1) Song of the Open Road
The speaker of the poem is describing a trip which he starts. He describes himself as being “healthy and free,” and he realizes he is the only person who is in complete control of his life. He decides his own destiny. He neglects the troubles of life and enjoys life.
2) Indian Weavers
Sarojini Naidu’s poem “Indian Weavers” uses the metaphor of weaving to describe the three stages of human life: birth, marriage, and death. The poem uses symbolic imagery and figures of speech to present the journey of life from birth to death. The different colors and times of day symbolize different occasions and stages of life.
3) The Inchcape Rock
‘The Inchcape Rock’ by Robert Southey narrates the story of Sir Ralph the Rover. He was a reckless and selfish pirate. He cut off the warning bell from the Inchcape Rock. He felt jealous of Abbot because he placed the warning bell on the Inchcape rock, and everyone blessed him. He took out the warning bell from the Inchcape rock.
However, as Sir Ralph sets sail after his malicious act, he and his crew encounter challenging conditions, including a thick haze, strong swell, and loss of visibility. In a moment of poetic justice, they strike the very rock Sir Ralph had tampered with, leading to their ship’s sinking. In his dying moments, Sir Ralph hears a sound resembling the Inchcape Bell, signaling his reckoning.
4) Have You Earned Your Tomorrow
The inspirational poem ‘Have You Earned Your Tomorrow’ is written by the famous poet Edgar Guest. The poem beautifully explains the poet’s thoughts and vision. The theme of the poem is believing in karma. The poet advises us to do good today and we would receive the same goodness the following day or in future. A reader will immediately notice upon beginning ‘Have You Earned Your Tomorrow’ that the text is marked by questions directed at the reader.
“Have You Earned Your Tomorrow” ही प्रेरणादायी कविता प्रसिद्ध कवी एडगर गेस्ट यांनी लिहिली आहे.
5) Father Returning Home
‘Father Returning Home’ by Dilip Chitre is a poem about the alienation and isolation that elderly people experience in modern cities. The poem uses various details to create a clear atmosphere that reflects the father’s weariness and lack of human connection.
6) Money
‘Money‘ by W.H Davies is intended to give a warning that having money does not give any guaranty to bring happiness. In the poem, the narrator informs that he was only able to experience true joy in his life when he lost all of his money. Money attracts a lot of fake friends. People who want to be in your life regardless of how much money you have are worth more than any riches. The poem encourages the reader to appreciate the genuine relationships they have in their life, neglecting money.
7) She Walks in Beauty
The poem ‘She Walks in Beauty’ praises a woman’s beauty. More specifically, it presents that beauty as a kind of harmony that is as perfect as it is rare. This particular woman’s beauty is practically unparalleled because of the exquisite harmony and visual balance of her looks. Beauty, the poem thus suggests, is perfection achieved through harmony.
8) Small Towns and Rivers
‘Small Towns and The River’ is a poem about life and mortality. The town symbolizing death presents a weeping picture of those who have lost their dear ones. In this poem, not only the poet grieves but the town also mourns the loss. Moreover, the poet presents a contrast in the image of the river that lives eternally whereas, humans are prone to death and decay.
